Common Tax Questions

We take the guesswork and frustration out of personal taxes, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be questions. Here are some of the common questions we get asked:

What tax deductions can I claim to lower my tax bill?

There are several tax deductions available, depending on your situation. Common deductions include medical expenses that exceed a certain percentage of your income, childcare expenses, and charitable donations. You may also qualify for deductions related to business expenses if you’re self-employed. Our personal tax questionnaire helps us to ensure we are claiming everything relevant to your situation.

A tax deduction reduces your taxable income, meaning you pay taxes on a smaller amount. For example, if you deduct $1,000 from your taxable income, your tax bill is lowered by your tax rate times that amount. A tax credit, on the other hand, directly reduces the amount of tax you owe. For instance, a $1,000 tax credit reduces your tax bill by $1,000, regardless of your income.

The typical deadline for filing personal taxes is April 30th each year. However, if the 30th falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline may be extended. Self-employed individuals, and their spouses, have until June 15th to file, however the payment for any taxes owing is still due by Apr 30th.

Failing to file your taxes on time can result in penalties and interest charges on any taxes owed. The CRA charges a penalty for late filing, and interest is charged on any unpaid balance from the due date of your return. In some cases, continued failure to file taxes could lead to legal action or garnishment of wages. If you are unable to pay your taxes, it is still important to file on time to avoid penalties. You can always call the CRA to request a payment plan on the amount owing that may fit better in your budget.

In Canada, you can request an extension to file your taxes if you are unable to meet the deadline, but this must be done before the due date. However, an extension to file does not extend the due date for paying any taxes owed. If you owe taxes, interest will accrue until the balance is paid, even if you file late.

While tax software can be helpful, having someone with the proper training, offers a level of expertise and personalized service that software cannot. At Lakeside Accounting, we have in-depth knowledge of the tax code and can tailor your return to your unique circumstances. We can help to identify complex tax situations that may be difficult to navigate on your own, saving you time and potentially avoiding costly mistakes. Furthermore, we can provide ongoing support and guidance if any issues arise after filing.

While no one can guarantee that you won’t be audited, we can significantly reduce the likelihood of an audit by ensuring your tax return is accurate and fully compliant with tax laws. We know the common audit red flags and can help you avoid making mistakes that could trigger one. Additionally, in the event of an audit, we can provide professional representation and help you navigate the process smoothly.
